Terms of Service

Effective 2 May 2026.

1. Who we are

PlaneDex (“we”, “us”) is operated by the PlaneDex maintainers. These Terms govern your access to and use of the website at planedex.org and any related services (“Service”). By using the Service you agree to these Terms.

2. Accounts

You need an account to upload photos, comment, follow other users, or use the API above the anonymous quota. You must be at least 13 years old (16 in the EU) to register. You are responsible for activity on your account; keep your credentials safe and notify us if you suspect misuse.

3. Your content

You retain copyright in the photos and other material you upload (“Your Content”). By uploading, you grant PlaneDex a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, display, re-encode, resize, distribute over our CDN, and embed Your Content for the purpose of operating and promoting the Service. You can revoke this licence at any time by deleting the content; copies in backups will expire on our normal backup rotation.

You confirm that you took the photos yourself (or have an explicit licence from the photographer) and that publishing them does not violate anyone’s rights.

Public licence chosen per upload. When you upload a photo you select the licence under which third parties may use it:

  • All rights reserved— viewing on PlaneDex is permitted; any other use requires your written permission.
  • CC BY 4.0— reuse permitted with attribution.
  • CC0 1.0— dedicated to the public domain, no attribution required.

The chosen licence is shown next to the photo on the site and governs what other users and visitors may do with it. You may change the licence on a future version of the photo, but the previous licence remains valid for copies that were made while it was in effect — CC licences are irrevocable by design.

4. Acceptable use

  • No content that is unlawful, defamatory, hateful, or sexual.
  • No AI-generated, composite, or sky-replaced images presented as real photos.
  • No scraping, mass-downloading, or attempts to circumvent rate limits or paywalls.
  • No use of the Service to harass other users.

We may remove content and suspend accounts that breach these rules.

5. Paid plans

PlaneDex Pro and paid API tiers are billed in advance via our payment processor (Mollie). Subscriptions auto-renew until you cancel from your account settings. You may cancel at any time; your plan stays active until the end of the paid period. Refunds for unused time are at our discretion and handled case-by-case — contact billing@planedex.org.

Consumers in the EU have a 14-day right of withdrawal under the Consumer Rights Directive. By starting to use a paid feature immediately, you agree that we may begin performing the service before the 14 days expire and you waive your right of withdrawal for the portion already delivered.

6. Third parties

We rely on Supabase (auth + storage signed URLs), Cloudflare R2 (photo blobs), Cloudflare (CDN), Mollie (payments) and Google AdSense (advertising, when consented). See the Privacy Policy for details.

7. Source code

The PlaneDex source code is © PlaneDex, all rights reserved. The fact that a repository is publicly visible (for example on GitHub) does not grant any licence to copy, modify, redistribute, host, or create derivative works from the code.

A specific repository may include a LICENSEfile that grants additional rights — if present, that file governs that repository only and overrides this default. Without such a file, you must obtain written permission from us before using the code for anything beyond reading it.

This section concerns the application code itself. It does not restrict your rights to Your Content (section 3) or to other users’ photos under their chosen licence.

8. Disclaimer & liability

The Service is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind. We don’t guarantee uninterrupted availability or that the data in the registry is fit for any particular purpose (in particular: do not use PlaneDex for flight-safety decisions). To the maximum extent permitted by law, our aggregate liability for any claim arising from your use of the Service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.

9. Termination

You can delete your account at any time from account settings. We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these Terms.

10. Changes

We may update these Terms. Material changes will be announced on the site and, for paid users, by email at least 30 days before taking effect.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands. Disputes will be brought before the competent court in Amsterdam, without prejudice to mandatory consumer rights in your country of residence.
